“AI Summaries Threaten Food Blogger’s Website”

Deb Perelman, the creator of the renowned food blog Smitten Kitchen, is commemorating the 20th anniversary of her website this summer. Perelman, known for her inclusive approach, engages with her audience across various social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, always guiding them back to her website’s rich collection of recipes and stories.

However, Perelman is currently grappling with a new obstacle – AI summaries. She expressed concern about encountering her own recipes condensed into AI-generated blurbs at the top of search results without her authorization. In response, she is actively seeking measures to limit AI’s impact on her site.

Google has recently introduced “AI Mode,” a conversational search feature attracting over a billion monthly users. This update prioritizes AI-generated summaries over website links, allowing users to obtain answers without leaving Google’s main page. ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are also being utilized to answer queries and perform complex tasks, reshaping the online landscape to cater to automated bots.

The decline in human web traffic is a growing concern, as revealed by data from Cloudflare indicating significant drops in human visits to various industry websites. Hamzah Khadim, co-founder of Logik Digital, emphasizes the shift from keyword-based to conversational search, stressing the importance of websites providing information that aligns with AI-generated responses.

To adapt to this evolving digital landscape, Logik Digital has expanded its focus from SEO to GEO (generative engine optimization), emphasizing the need for websites to include detailed content to establish credibility and resonate with AI algorithms. This strategy involves enriching website content with informative text, such as in the “About Us” section, to enhance trust-building with AI systems.

The monetization of content poses a challenge for website owners, especially those reliant on ad revenue or subscriptions. Mozilla’s president, Mark Surman, raises concerns about the future of independent content creation if AI bots replace human visitors. Additionally, Wikipedia faces financial implications due to the substantial server costs associated with accommodating AI bots’ high volume of requests.

In response to the changing digital landscape, media companies like Reddit and USA Today are contemplating adjustments to their relationship with Google to counter declining web traffic. While challenges persist, the hope remains for a model that upholds the diversity of voices and perspectives on the open web, as emphasized by Deb Perelman, who believes that AI summaries lack the unique context and individual touch that creators offer through their content.
