Grady Demond Wilson, famous for his role as Lamont Sanford on the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, has passed away at 79 years old.
His son, Demond Wilson Jr, shared the news, revealing that Wilson died at his Palm Springs, California home due to cancer-related complications. Demond expressed his love for his father, calling him a remarkable man.
Professionally known as Demond Wilson, Grady starred in Sanford and Son from 1972 to 1977, then went on to appear in Baby… I’m Back! and The New Odd Couple. He also showcased his acting skills in the film Me and the Kid in 1993 and made a comeback in Eleanor’s Bench in 2023 after a long hiatus.
Initially named Grady, Wilson embarked on a showbiz career early in life, performing on Broadway and at the Apollo Theatre. After serving in the Vietnam War, where he was injured, he transitioned to Hollywood.
His portrayal of Lamont Sanford in Sanford and Son solidified his place in the entertainment industry. However, Wilson later shifted his focus to spirituality, becoming an ordained Christian minister and establishing a ministry for ex-convicts.
Apart from his on-screen achievements, Wilson authored books like Second Banana, which delves into his Sanford and Son experience. He has led a stable personal life, married to Cicely Johnston since 1974 with six children.
His co-star Lynn Hamilton, known for her role as Donna Harris on Sanford and Son, passed away in June 2025. Hamilton’s journey from Yazoo City, Mississippi, to Hollywood exemplified determination and talent, inspiring many in the entertainment industry.
