“Gorton and Denton by-election: Future of 6,000 children at stake”

When voters head to the polls in Gorton and Denton this Thursday, they hold the future of over 6,000 local children in their hands.

These youngsters stand to benefit on April 1st when the despised two-child rule is eliminated. Some low-income families could see an increase of nearly £70 per week as a result.

Child poverty continues to affect almost half of all children – 48% – in the constituency. In Longsight, a staggering 73% of children – 3 out of 4 – are growing up in poverty.

In April, as the child-friendly initiatives of the Labour government come into effect, these numbers are expected to significantly decrease, bringing renewed hope. This will better equip children for success in their academic endeavors.

With the introduction of more breakfast clubs, free school meals, and additional Sure Start centers on the horizon, the government’s efforts against poverty are taking shape, lifting children out of hardship and opening doors to new opportunities.

Recently, the Reform party expressed a desire to abolish the two-child rule as well. However, their current stance, led by Robert Jenrick, is to reinstate the rule, potentially pushing children back into poverty.

Critics of the Reform party’s narrative argue that the affected children are not solely from workless families, as claimed by the party. Six out of ten children impacted by the policy have at least one working parent.

Additionally, 30% of these children are either too young, ill, or disabled, preventing their caregivers from seeking employment. Thus, the portrayal of parents as lazy or irresponsible is unfounded and morally objectionable.

The upcoming by-election presents a pivotal decision: continue supporting the fight against child poverty with Labour’s promising local candidate Angeliki Stogia or revert to the Tory-era struggles.
