“Rare Amur Leopard Cub Brings Hope to Devon Zoo”

In Devon, a rare Amur leopard cub named Zeya was recently born, bringing joy and hope amidst global concerns about species extinction. These leopards, also known as Far East leopards, are critically endangered and are considered the rarest big cats in the world.

Typically found in northern China or southeastern Russia, Amur leopards have a distinctive thick, patterned fur that helps them survive extreme cold conditions. With only around 120 individuals left worldwide, Zeya’s birth in Devon is a significant addition to the dwindling population.

Zeya’s arrival was carefully planned, with her mother Lena being transferred from Colchester Zoo to Dartmoor Zoo after her father, Freddo, connected with Lena through an animal dating site. The successful pairing led to the birth of Zeya, who recently made her public debut at the zoo.

The team at Dartmoor Zoo is thrilled to welcome Zeya, given the critical status of Amur leopards in the wild. David Gibson, a representative from the zoo, expressed excitement about the new addition and emphasized the importance of conserving this species for the future.

As Zeya adjusts to her new environment, visitors are encouraged to be respectful and quiet during their visits to allow her to settle in comfortably and continue to thrive. The zoo staff are monitoring her closely as she explores her surroundings and develops the skills necessary for her future.
