Asda has been penalized with a £500,000 fine for selling expired products at one of its stores in the UK. The Barnsley branch was found to have items, including hummus, pizzas, and curries, that were past their sell-by dates by more than two weeks. Following an investigation by the Barnsley Council Trading Standards team, Asda admitted to five violations under the Food Safety Act and was directed to pay £507,767 in fines and costs on January 29. The supermarket has implemented new date checking procedures across all its stores to prevent similar incidents.
A spokesperson from Barnsley Trading Standards emphasized that despite improvements made by Asda, such as implementing a new checking system, retraining staff, and increasing store audits, the substantial fine of £100,000 per offense sends a strong message against non-compliance. Cllr Wendy Cain from Barnsley Council reiterated the commitment to ensuring community safety, emphasizing the importance of businesses selling only safe food. The outcome of the case underscores the priority placed on public health and safety over profit, with actions taken against businesses failing to adhere to regulations or heed warnings.
In response, an Asda representative expressed disappointment over the presence of expired products at the Barnsley store in 2024, acknowledging that it did not meet customer expectations or internal standards. Since the incident, Asda has rolled out a new date code checking process in all its stores to ensure the availability of fresh products for customers.
Recent data from market research firm Worldpanel by Numerator shows that grocery price inflation eased to 4% in January, the lowest since April. Asda’s sales decreased by 3.7% compared to the previous year. Consumer trends indicate a growing interest in high-protein and high-fiber foods, with a notable increase in sales of cottage cheese. Additionally, sales of fresh fruit, dried pulses, fresh fish, poultry, and chilled yogurt have seen positive year-on-year growth.
