Salon Owner’s Near-Death Experience Sparks Work-Life Balance Shift

A salon owner shared her near-death experience attributing it to her ‘girl boss’ lifestyle, where the lack of bathroom breaks during grueling 12-hour shifts led to sepsis. Justine McLellan fell ill while relaxing by the pool at her holiday home in Turkey. Initially dismissing it as sunstroke, she later experienced severe symptoms prompting her husband to seek medical help.

Diagnosed with a kidney infection and sepsis, Justine received treatment in the hospital with IV drips and antibiotics. Following a four-day hospital stay, she was discharged with a prescription for antibiotics, grateful for the care she received. Justine believes her busy work schedule, preventing her from taking breaks, contributed to her health issues.

After the incident, Justine reduced her work hours at her salon and shifted her focus towards helping clients with hair loss solutions. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the importance of listening to one’s body and avoiding overwork. Justine’s decision to prioritize her health and family led her to reevaluate her work-life balance and make positive changes in her professional life.

Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, occurs when the body’s response to an infection harms its own tissues. Symptoms in adults may include confusion, muscle pain, reduced urine output, breathing difficulties, and skin discoloration.
