UK Trade Minister Slams Trump’s China Trade Criticism

A UK minister has criticized Donald Trump for his assertion that trading with China poses a danger to the UK. Trade minister Sir Chris Bryant emphasized the importance of engaging with China, calling it “absolutely illogical” to avoid such trade relations, especially after President Trump disapproved of Keir Starmer’s recent visit to China.

In response to the US president’s remarks, Sir Chris stated in an interview with BBC Breakfast that Trump’s views were incorrect. He highlighted the significance of maintaining a relationship with China, acknowledging the country’s status as a major global power and the UK’s fourth largest export market. Sir Chris stressed the necessity of addressing disagreements with China while acknowledging the benefits of trade ties.

Sir Chris further commented on Sky News, underscoring the need to approach the China relationship with a balanced perspective. He acknowledged the economic importance of China as the world’s second-largest economy and highlighted the mutual benefits of engaging in trade with the country.

During his visit, Mr. Starmer finalized agreements with China, including a visa-free travel arrangement for UK citizens and a tariff reduction on whisky exports to China. Both countries also agreed to work towards establishing clear guidelines for UK businesses operating in China, aiming to enhance trade cooperation.

In response to President Trump’s criticism of UK-China relations, Sir Chris highlighted the interconnectivity between the UK and China in various aspects of daily life, emphasizing the necessity of engaging with China while maintaining awareness of potential challenges. He commended the recent security agreements with China to combat illicit activities such as drug trafficking and smuggling.
