“Wetherspoon Debuts First Pub in Europe at Alicante Airport”

Wetherspoon has recently inaugurated its inaugural pub in Europe, introducing classic English breakfast options at the new establishment. The popular British chain has ventured into Spain with a pub located at Alicante airport, catering to travelers en route to destinations like Benidorm and other familiar holiday spots.

This launch is anticipated to be the first of many, as company CEO Tim Martin has hinted at potential future openings, possibly within the upcoming months. However, patrons seeking the familiar Wetherspoon ambiance may be surprised by the Spanish-inspired decor, featuring tiles and cream paint instead of the traditional Wetherspoon carpet.

While some menu items differ from the UK branches, such as the absence of British fish and chips due to the lack of a deep-fat fryer, the pub still offers familiar favorites like the British breakfast with fried eggs, bacon, sausage, and beans. Prices at the new pub are slightly higher than the UK average, with the traditional breakfast priced at 10.25 euros, equivalent to approximately £8.94.

Named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, the pub operates daily from 6 am to 9 pm, offering nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space and an outdoor terrace for additional seating. Founder Tim Martin expressed enthusiasm for the Spanish venture, expecting a positive response from customers traveling through Alicante Airport.

The menu at the pub includes a variety of dishes such as sausages, chips, burgers, and local specialties like garlic prawns and Spanish omelette. For beverages, options range from Amstel Original and Stella Artois to Guinness and BrewDog Punk IPA, with prices varying between 4.95 to 7.50 euros.

As the pub welcomed its first customers, feedback was positive, with travelers appreciating the convenience and familiar offerings. With over 2.6 million Brits visiting the Costa Blanca annually, the Alicante pub is poised to attract a significant audience. The expansion overseas is likely to involve partnerships with franchise operators, following the successful trend in the UK.

Wetherspoon, known for its cost-effective offerings, has seen success amidst challenging times for the pub industry. The Alicante airport pub, managed by franchise partner Lagardère Travel Retail, is part of the company’s ambitious plan to open approximately 30 pubs in the next year, marking its largest expansion in a decade.
