A caution has been issued by a pharmacist regarding the potential decrease in the effectiveness of medication, an issue that may go unnoticed by many. The alert was raised by Anum, a Clinical Pharmacist who utilized social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to highlight the ‘significant concerns’ associated with a common error.
Through an informative video shared on Instagram, Anum emphasized the risks of crushing or opening tablets before consumption. She revealed, “Are you aware that crushing tablets or opening capsules and consuming the contents can pose dangers?”
Anum further explained, “Hello everyone, I’m Anum, a clinical pharmacist based in the UK. It is important to note that not all tablets are meant to be crushed, and not all capsules are meant to be opened.”
“Some medications have a modified release mechanism. By crushing these tablets or opening the capsules, you could interfere with the intended release profile of the medication, potentially reducing its duration of action and increasing the likelihood of adverse effects,” she cautioned.
Anum highlighted the presence of enteric coatings on certain tablets that serve to protect the stomach from the medication and shield the medication from stomach acid. Tampering with this coating can be detrimental. Additionally, some tablets and capsules can become harmful if touched after being crushed.
Consequently, Anum advised individuals to consult a healthcare professional before altering any medication by crushing or cutting it. “Prior to modifying the form of your medication, such as crushing tablets or opening capsules, if you struggle with swallowing your medication, it is advisable to consult your pharmacist or GP to explore alternative options,” she recommended.
Pharmacists can provide suggestions for alternative forms of medication for those who struggle with swallowing pills, such as liquids or smaller tablets. An open discussion with a healthcare provider is crucial before making any changes.
Anum reiterated the importance of seeking professional advice before attempting to alter medication formulations. She emphasized that what may seem like a simple solution could lead to severe consequences and reduce the effectiveness of the medication. Seeking guidance from a pharmacist or GP is paramount for individuals facing challenges with their medication regimen.
The NHS also underscores the significance of not crushing pills, opening capsules, or modifying medication without seeking medical advice, as it could compromise the efficacy of the treatment. To aid in swallowing pills, the NHS recommends taking them with water, and suggests various techniques to facilitate swallowing.
