Zelda Williams Defends Father’s Legacy on Social Media

Zelda Williams has stated that she only engages with the social media platform X when she feels compelled to address the exploitation of her late father, actor Robin Williams, in a public manner. In a recent post on Monday, she emphasized that the platform serves as a convenient public space for her to refute misinformation and defend her father, despite the challenging nature of this task.

Using the platform, Williams denounced an AI-generated video purporting to show private footage of the late actor discussing conspiracy theories. She clarified that not only was the video fabricated, but it lacked authenticity in its presentation. Williams expressed her disbelief that any true fan of Robin Williams would find the video convincing, pointing out the robotic and unconvincing nature of the voice featured in the video.

In her post, Williams criticized individuals who resort to utilizing a deceased individual’s likeness to bolster their arguments, condemning such actions as a form of public manipulation. She urged for respect and dignity in allowing her father to rest peacefully, emphasizing that his passing should not be exploited for personal gain or influence.

As a filmmaker and the director of “Lisa Frankenstein,” Williams has been vocal in her opposition to AI deepfakes, emphasizing the importance of consent in such technological creations. She highlighted the ethical concerns surrounding the recreation of real individuals without their explicit consent, emphasizing the infringement on their autonomy and humanity.

Williams previously appealed to the public to refrain from sending her AI-generated recreations of her father, highlighting the ongoing effort to honor Robin Williams’ wishes regarding the use of his likeness. Throughout his life, Robin Williams was vigilant about how his image and voice were utilized, as evidenced by his past disputes with entities like Disney over the commercialization of his voice.

Additionally, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that the Robin Williams Trust includes provisions restricting the use of his voice or likeness for 25 years following his passing, ensuring that his image remains protected until August 11, 2039. Zelda Williams remains committed to upholding her father’s legacy and protecting his wishes, expressing her determination to reciprocate the protection he provided her with throughout the years.
