“Valve Unveils Steam Machine: Compact, Powerful, Open-Source”

Valve unveiled a new range of hardware following the success of the Steam Deck. The upcoming Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame are poised to expand Valve’s hardware offerings, enhancing accessibility to high-performance PC gaming without complexity.

Despite limited information on release dates and pricing, Valve has shared key details about the Steam Machine. This innovative PC device, resembling a compact cube, boasts sufficient graphical power to smoothly run modern PC games on various displays.

One highlighted use of the Steam Machine is as a convenient living room gaming system, featuring an HDMI port for easy connection to TVs, enabling users to enjoy Steam games comfortably from their sofas.

Operating on the Linux-based SteamOS, similar to the Steam Deck, the Steam Machine guarantees compatibility with most games in the Steam library, excluding those requiring Windows for anti-cheat functions.

Notably, the Steam Machine is open-source, allowing users to install different operating systems. While users can switch to Windows if desired, retaining SteamOS offers benefits like compatibility with the quick resume feature akin to the Steam Deck.

Equipped with an SD card slot, the Steam Machine enables easy game storage expansion and transfer between devices like the Steam Deck or the new Steam Frame VR headset.

Valve has incorporated an LED lightbar on the device’s front, offering visual cues for system tasks or customizable programming options, enhancing user experience.

Although specifics on hardware specifications remain undisclosed, Valve hints at utilizing a powerful ‘discreet, semi-custom AMD GPU,’ estimated to be approximately ‘six times’ more potent than the Steam Deck.

Regarding performance, the Steam Machine is projected to support up to 4K gaming at 60fps in select games, leveraging AI upscaling technology like FSR for optimal visuals.

Potential buyers can choose between two storage options – a 512GB SSD model or a 2TB variant, both expandable via the microSD card slot.

Valve’s silence on pricing is attributed to market fluctuations, particularly in RAM costs. The uncertainty surrounding hardware pricing amid market volatility poses challenges for Valve in setting an affordable yet profitable price point for the Steam Machine.

While initial estimates place the Steam Machine’s price between £600 and £800, the final cost remains undetermined until market conditions stabilize.

Valve initially targeted an ‘Early 2026’ release for the Steam Machine. However, delays linked to the RAM shortage crisis may impact the device’s launch, with no concrete information available on the official release date.

Although Valve has not signaled any delays in the planned 2026 launch, uncertainties persist, suggesting a potential delay in the Steam Machine’s availability.
