Donald Trump’s controversial bid to purchase Greenland has sparked calls for a boycott of the upcoming men’s football World Cup in the United States. Members of Parliament urged UK opposition leader Keir Starmer to take action against the US President following threats of imposing tariffs on the UK for opposing the Greenland acquisition. Trump’s warning of imposing tariffs on multiple countries, including the UK, and increasing levies on NATO allies if a deal on Greenland is not reached, has raised tensions.
Prominent MPs Simon Hoare and Luke Taylor proposed that England, Scotland, and other qualifying home nations should consider withdrawing from the World Cup in protest against Trump. Trump’s recent criticism of the UK’s Chagos deal as “an act of GREAT STUPIDITY” has added to the growing pressure on the matter. Hoare emphasized the need to understand Trump’s motivations and suggested tactics to make him reconsider his actions.
The World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 11, with Scotland playing their first game in nearly three decades shortly after, while England will face Croatia on June 17. Scotland’s matches will be held in Massachusetts and Florida, while England’s group stage games are set to take place in Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.
In response to concerns raised by Hoare and Taylor, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the UK Government’s diplomatic efforts that led to adjustments in the US’s tariff proposals and positive developments in relations with Ukraine. However, opinions are divided among officials on whether to cancel the planned state visit to the US or boycott the World Cup as a response to Trump’s actions. Dame Emily Thornberry emphasized the importance of remaining calm and maintaining solidarity with allies amid the ongoing tensions.
