“Trump Threatens to Withdraw US Support in Iraq”

Donald Trump has made a bold statement online, expressing his desire to “revitalize Iraq,” involving himself in yet another foreign election. Historically, US Presidents meddling in the affairs of Iraq has led to disastrous outcomes; however, Trump seems intent on revisiting this approach. Through a post on Truth Social, he voiced concerns about the potential reappointment of Nouri al-Maliki as Prime Minister, citing the country’s previous descent into turmoil under his leadership. Trump warned that if Maliki regains power, the US will withdraw support, claiming it would hinder Iraq’s chances of success, prosperity, and freedom. He concluded with a call to “MAKE IRAQ GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump has been active in attempting to sway elections in various countries through his posts on Truth Social, including recent instances in Argentina and Colombia. While his focus on Iraq is relatively uncommon, given America’s complicated history with the nation, it is not entirely unexpected.

However, Trump’s intervention in this election may be too late. Following today’s Presidential election in Iraq, the winning candidate will likely nominate the largest party’s representative in Parliament to form a new government, with the Shia blocs alliance currently holding the majority support.

The 75-year-old politician, who previously served as Iraq’s Prime Minister from 2006 to 2014 amidst the aftermath of the US-led invasion and ISIS’s rise, has been proposed for a return to power by the Shia Coordination Framework. His selection is based on his extensive political and administrative experience and previous role in state management.

As Trump gears up for a scheduled speech at an Iowa rally, where he is anticipated to focus on economic matters, his administration has initiated steps to potentially reopen the closed US Embassy in Venezuela. This move signals a willingness to explore restoring diplomatic relations with the South American nation following the military intervention that ousted former President Nicolás Maduro.
