“Speculation Mounts Over Labour MP’s Potential Resignation”

Andy Burnham has expressed his lack of information regarding rumors of a suspended Labour MP’s potential resignation from the Commons. The MP for Gorton and Denton, Andrew Gwynne, is reportedly considering stepping down, which would prompt a by-election for the North West seat. Gwynne faced dismissal as a minister and suspension from the Labour Party last year due to inappropriate messages in a WhatsApp group named Trigger Me Timbers.

Speculation has arisen that Burnham, the current Greater Manchester Mayor and former Cabinet minister, might vie for the seat, potentially challenging Keir Starmer’s leadership. However, Burnham stated today that he has not been officially informed of Gwynne’s intentions and has had no communication with Gwynne or his associates on the matter.

If Burnham decides to run in a by-election, he would require approval from the National Executive Committee, Labour’s governing body, which is perceived to support Keir Starmer. The NEC could potentially block Burnham from candidacy, sparking internal party discord.

Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright denounced the notion of barring Burnham from seeking selection as the Labour candidate in the potential by-election, labeling it a “democratic outrage.” Wright emphasized that the FBU, as an affiliated union, would not stand by and allow senior Labour figures like Burnham to be excluded from the process.

While Gwynne had previously denied plans to vacate his seat, reports surfaced that he had reached a pension settlement with the Commons, indicating possible retirement from the chamber. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged Gwynne’s health challenges and expressed well wishes for him and his family.

Streeting stressed the importance of fielding a strong candidate and campaigning vigorously in the potential by-election. He emphasized the need for top-tier candidates to step forward and highlighted Burnham’s impactful leadership at both national and local levels.

Efforts to reach Gwynne for comment by the Mirror have been made.
