In a recent report by consumer group Which?, it was revealed that the major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The survey, which gathered feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The study aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. The results indicated that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many of the smaller players in the industry. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY.
Among the major providers, EE performed the best, securing the ninth spot. Conversely, O2 and Three were ranked lower in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality. The report emphasized that price played a significant role, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks spent only £9 on average.
Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the report highlighted that coverage quality is not compromised. Many of these smaller networks utilize the infrastructure of major players, ensuring customers can access comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands. Additionally, switching between providers is often a straightforward process, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes.
One consumer shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a price increase and switching to a more affordable plan with SMARTY, saving around £200 annually. Natalie Hitchins, the Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently excel in customer service and affordability, providing households with better value and price stability compared to larger mobile firms.
Hitchins encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers offering better value. The full scores from Which? ranked Talkmobile at 83%, Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, followed by other providers like Voxi, 1p Mobile, and Lebara.
The report serves as a reminder that smaller mobile networks are proving to be strong contenders in the industry, offering competitive prices and enhanced customer service, ultimately providing consumers with more choices and value for their money.
