“Sky Q Faces Competition from Humax’s Aura EZ 4K Recorder”

Sky Q, a highly acclaimed set-top box, is renowned for its exceptional features such as live TV recording, access to premium channels, on-demand content, and popular streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. However, Sky seems to be shifting focus from its satellite-based platform to internet-based products like the Sky Stream box and Sky Glass TV, potentially paving the way for new competitors.

Humax has introduced the Aura EZ 4K TV Recorder, a device that shares many similarities with Sky Q. Equipped with a built-in 2TB hard drive for extensive storage of TV programs, movies, and sports, the Aura EZ stands out in a market where physical recording options are diminishing.

The Aura EZ not only supports recordings via an aerial but is also powered by Freely, allowing users to watch live TV over broadband. Developed by the creators of Freeview, Freely provides access to over 60 live channels and a wide array of on-demand programs, offering flexibility in moving the device between rooms, easy installation, and regular feature updates.

Enhancing the viewing experience, the Aura EZ boasts 4K HDR picture quality, Dolby Digital Plus audio, and an integrated TV guide displaying current and upcoming programs. Users can conveniently manage the device remotely through the Humax Aura EZ smartphone app, enabling seamless browsing of schedules and recording management from any location.

While Freely may not match Sky’s premium sports and movie offerings, it stands out for being free to use without any subscription fees. The Humax Aura EZ is scheduled for release in the UK in February 2026, priced at £249.

In a related development, Sky has unveiled a new subscription bundle, offering a combination of major streaming services at a discounted monthly rate. Priced at £24 per month, customers gain access to Disney+, Netflix, Hayu, and the upcoming HBO Max subscription, presenting a compelling value proposition by consolidating multiple streaming platforms under a single subscription.

Subscribers to the Ultimate TV plan will also enjoy access to over 130 premium channels, including exclusive channels like Sky Comedy, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, and Sky History. Additionally, Sky Cinema customers will benefit from a new Disney movie channel integrated into the TV guide.

The £24 bundle includes:
– Netflix Standard with Ads
– Disney+ Standard with Ads (from March)
– HBO Max Basic with Ads (from March 26)
– Hayu (from July, with selected content available from March)
– Over 130 Sky channels

This move by Sky signifies a strategic approach to cater to diverse entertainment preferences while offering enhanced value to its customers.
