“Royal Artillery Officer Fatally Shot in Training Accident”

A 25-year-old military officer tragically lost his life in a live-fire training accident. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that Philip Muldowney, a Royal Artillery officer, was fatally shot during a nighttime exercise at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland on Sunday. The MoD expressed deep sorrow over Captain Muldowney’s passing and extended condolences to his family and friends.

Captain Muldowney, known as Gilbert among his peers, had a promising career since joining the Army in January 2020 and commissioning into the Royal Artillery in December of the same year after completing training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Described as an enthusiastic and dedicated officer, he was praised for his leadership, courage, and commitment to his fellow soldiers.

Gilbert was remembered for his vibrant personality, sense of humor, and ability to uplift those around him. His colleagues and superiors within the British Army paid tribute to his positive impact and professionalism. Captain Duncan Morrison, a fellow Fire Support Team commander, fondly recalled Gilbert’s lively presence and unwavering support during their time serving together.
