“Rethinking International Women’s Day: Moving Beyond Symbolism”

On the eve of International Men’s Day, it may not be for the reasons many assume, but rather a critique of the superficial nature of International Women’s Day celebrations. Despite ongoing global issues like violence against women and online misogyny, the approach to Women’s Day often falls short of addressing real gender inequalities in the workplace and society. While acknowledging the plight of women in other parts of the world, the UK still faces challenges such as a lack of female representation in business leadership, gender pay gaps, and inequities in parental leave policies. The annual themes promoted for International Women’s Day, like this year’s “Give to Gain,” are criticized for their lack of meaningful impact and symbolic gestures. Rather than tokenistic celebrations, the focus should be on concrete actions to address gender disparities in the workforce and beyond. Instead of empty gestures, advocating for gender equity in career advancement, fair parental benefits, and closing the gender pay gap should be the priority for International Women’s Day. By addressing these fundamental issues, true progress can be made, paving the way for more meaningful and impactful celebrations in the future.
