“Remains of Uzbek Woman Found in Trash Bin Spark Outrage and Protests”

A woman’s dismembered remains were discovered in a trash bin in Turkey, causing widespread shock and anger. The body, identified as belonging to a 37-year-old Uzbek national, was wrapped in a sheet and found by a paper collector in Istanbul’s Sisli district. Authorities located the victim’s head and legs through CCTV footage showing two men disposing of a suitcase in a separate bin.

Following the grim finding, police swiftly apprehended two Uzbek suspects at Istanbul Airport as they tried to flee the country. A third suspect was later taken into custody. The incident prompted demonstrations in Istanbul and Ankara, with over a thousand people rallying against femicides and seeking justice for the murdered woman.

Protesters gathered at Osmanbey metro station in Sisli, carrying signs that read, “Stop male violence!” and “We demand justice for women who are murdered.” Isil Kurt from Turkey’s We Will Stop Femicides Platform condemned the perpetrators’ audacity and highlighted the persistent issue of violence against women in the country.

Statistics reveal that in 2025, 294 women were killed by men in Turkey, with an additional 297 women found dead under suspicious circumstances. Shockingly, it was reported that 50,000 women and girls were murdered by family members or partners in 2024, as disclosed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and UN Women.
