A drug gang labeled as “professional” has been sentenced to a total of 74 years in prison for orchestrating the supply of over £1 million worth of cocaine within a month. The conspiracy was uncovered by law enforcement authorities in Europe who infiltrated the encrypted messaging network used by the gang. The operation involved two separate schemes to distribute class A drugs in the North East, with several individuals playing key roles in both endeavors.
Scott Fawcett, Anthony Wilson, Daniel Chambers, Mark Baird, David Emmerson, Michael Wakenshaw, Alan McLaughlin, Jesse McIver, and Thomas Foggin were all sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court. The court proceedings revealed the intricate workings of the gang, with Fawcett identified as the mastermind, Chambers as a trusted aide managing finances and supplies, and Baird and Emmerson serving as couriers and storemen.
The sophisticated nature of the drug operation was highlighted in the second conspiracy, involving Fawcett, Chambers, Wakenshaw, McLaughlin, McIver, and Wilson. The prosecution described it as a well-organized endeavor with each member expertly executing their roles in the wholesale drug trade, resulting in significant exchanges of cocaine and cash totaling hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The court learned that approximately 38 kilograms of cocaine were distributed, with plans for even larger quantities. The value of the drugs supplied between March and April 2020 alone was estimated at £1.3 million. The gang members had distinct responsibilities, with Wilson acting as a key associate, Wakenshaw as a courier and drug handler, and Chambers involved in processing the cocaine for profit maximization.
During a police raid in April 2020, a home in Lemington, Newcastle, previously linked to Foggin was searched, uncovering a cannabis farm and a hidden 9mm handgun with ammunition. DNA evidence linked several gang members to the seized firearm. The court proceedings detailed the criminal activities of each individual, resulting in significant jail sentences for their involvement in drug trafficking and related offenses.
Judge Julie Clemitson condemned the gang’s actions, emphasizing the destructive impact of drug misuse on individuals and communities. She underscored the importance of deterring such criminal activities to prevent further harm and reiterated the severe consequences of drug-related offenses on society as a whole.
