After vacating his residence at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Prince Andrew faces changes in his security arrangements following the loss of his remaining titles. Earlier in 2022, the discredited former Duke was stripped of state-funded police protection when he relinquished his royal title, His Royal Highness (HRH), amid legal proceedings with Virginia Giuffre. Despite settling with Giuffre without admitting guilt, Andrew forfeited his military titles and royal patronages to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth.
The recent removal of Andrew’s Prince and Duke of York titles by King Charles marked a significant shift for the disgraced royal. Consequently, Andrew, now considered a commoner, has been left to provide for his own security detail after stepping back from public duties. Previously, financial assistance for security was extended by his brother, the King, until last year when Charles terminated the support, including Andrew’s royal income and personal allowance.
The security costs for Andrew, estimated at £3 million annually, pose a considerable financial burden, especially after his income was drastically reduced. In contrast, Andrew’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, have been independently funding their private protection since 2011, with expenses reportedly around £500,000 per year.
As Andrew relocates to Sandringham in Norfolk, funded privately by King Charles, he will be safeguarded by the security measures implemented by the estate’s owner. Sandringham, a private estate covering 20,000 acres, provides a secluded environment with limited public access to the residence. Recent security concerns prompted flight restrictions over the estate following drone sightings during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit.
While Andrew settles into Sandringham, his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is making separate living arrangements and is not expected to join him in Norfolk. This transition signifies a new chapter for Prince Andrew as he adapts to life outside the royal fold.
