Police have reportedly taken into custody several individuals following gatherings on Manchester’s renowned Curry Mile for the second consecutive night of demonstrations. Images and videos from Wilmslow Road in Rusholme around 11 pm on Wednesday showed a substantial police presence in the area.
According to the Manchester Evening News, multiple arrests have been made, and some individuals have been given dispersal orders, instructing them to leave the vicinity or face potential arrest. Greater Manchester Police has not yet issued a statement regarding the recent incident.
The unrest follows a previous demonstration related to tensions in Syria between the government and the predominantly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces in the country’s northeastern region. A police spokesperson mentioned that a dispersal order was issued on Tuesday due to disorder on Wilmslow Road. While the initial protest was peaceful, some individuals later engaged in property damage and threw objects at officers, leading to the closure of Wilmslow Road.
Chief Inspector Stephen Wiggins of GMP’s City of Manchester district commented on Tuesday’s protests, emphasizing the police’s role in facilitating peaceful demonstrations while taking firm action against disorderly conduct. The police are investigating the events and reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible.
