Photographer Frederik Ruegger discovered the captivating show “At Home with the Furys” while browsing TV listings. An avid boxing enthusiast, Gypsy King Tyson Fury shared insights into his life within the Traveller community. Intrigued, Frederik, a Berlin-based German, traveled to Manchester for the renowned Appleby Horse Fair, Europe’s largest gathering of Gypsy and Traveller communities held annually in Cumbria.
Enthralled by the traditional folk song “I’m a Stranger in this Country” at a CD stall, Frederik envisioned it as the title for a photographic book capturing the essence of horse fairs in the UK and Ireland over two years. His interest in boxing and admiration for Tyson Fury resonated with the sense of belonging and connection he sought to depict through his work.
Embracing his role as an outsider among UK photographers at the fair, Frederik found common ground with the Travellers, building rapport and trust over multiple visits. His candid photographs, taken with a 28mm lens, offer a glimpse into the timeless traditions of the community, showcasing genuine moments of everyday life.
Focused on building authentic relationships, Frederik’s respectful approach fostered lasting friendships within the Traveller community. Despite challenges posed by using analogue equipment, the rewarding experience of capturing their world was well worth the effort. Reflecting on the importance of preserving traditions and identities, Frederik aims to continue documenting the evolving narratives of the Travellers over time.
Published by Kehrer Verlag, “I am a Stranger in This Country” by Frederik Ruegger encapsulates the unique essence of the Traveller community. The book serves as a tribute to the individuals who welcomed him into their world, showcasing their stories with honesty and respect.
