“Over 1.4M Homes Receive Cold Weather Payments in England & Wales”

Nearly 1.5 million households in England and Wales have already been granted cold weather payments this winter, as confirmed by the government. These payments, amounting to £25 each, are issued when the average temperature in a specific postcode area drops to or is forecasted to be zero degrees Celsius or lower over seven consecutive days. The recent freezing conditions in the early weeks of 2026 have led to additional payments for eligible households.

The cold weather payments were activated due to temperatures falling below zero at over 30 Met Office weather stations nationwide. Last winter, approximately 1.4 million cold weather payments were distributed. According to the Department for Work and Pensions, over £35 million has been allocated to vulnerable households in England and Wales so far this winter, with the program running from November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

Individuals receiving Pension Credit are typically eligible for Cold Weather Payments. Additionally, those on Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify if they meet specific criteria related to their employment status, health conditions, disability, or caring responsibilities for young or disabled children.

While residents of Scotland do not receive Cold Weather Payments, they may be entitled to an annual Winter Heating Payment instead. Pat McFadden, the Pensions Secretary, emphasized the importance of this support for vulnerable households during temperature drops. He highlighted the broader assistance programs in place, such as a higher National Living Wage, reductions in energy bills, and a Winter Fuel Payment of £300 for over nine million pensioners, which are collectively benefiting households nationwide.

Low-income pensioners are encouraged to apply for Pension Credit, which offers access to various forms of support, including assistance with housing costs, free NHS dental treatment, council tax discounts, help with energy expenses, and a free TV license for individuals over 75. Despite these benefits, statistics from 2023/24 revealed that around one million eligible pensioners are not claiming Pension Credit, missing out on an average of £50 per week, totaling £2,600 annually. Organizations like Age UK stress the importance of ensuring that critical financial support reaches those most in need, particularly during cold weather periods.

The charity Independent Age echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the significance of Cold Weather Payments during chilly spells. They welcomed the UK Government’s £35 million investment to aid individuals facing challenges in heating their homes and expressed their commitment to collaborating with the government to ensure that older people on low incomes receive the necessary financial support.
