O2 has officially announced that numerous customers are receiving a complimentary rapid upgrade. This upgrade is introducing faster 5G+ services to users throughout the UK, providing improved mobile connectivity and significantly quicker download speeds. O2 guarantees a 50% increase in performance compared to older 4G networks.

In addition to speed and reliability enhancements, users can expect extended battery life as devices consume less power by no longer needing to connect to both 4G and 5G networks simultaneously. This differs from traditional 5G technology, which relies on 4G support to function properly.

The rollout of this upgrade is currently underway for users with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, with over 700 towns and cities already activated.

Christian Hindennach, the Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, elaborated on the improvements, stating, “Our 5G+ service is now accessible to millions of customers across the UK, and uniquely, it’s available to all O2 users on any plan – unlike competitors. This upgrade enhances performance in high-traffic areas, including large event venues, benefiting both residents and visitors. It exemplifies Virgin Media O2’s dedication to enhancing network capabilities and delivering a more dependable user experience. We are investing £2 million daily to help customers prepare for upcoming mobile advancements.”

To check local availability, users can visit O2’s website and input their postcode. Some popular 5G+ compatible devices include the iPhone 15, 16 (including 16e), and 17 series, as well as the Google Pixel 9 (including Fold) and 10 series.

5G+ refers to an upgraded iteration of 5G networks that incorporates advanced technologies like higher-frequency spectrum, enhanced antennas, and network optimization to provide faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity.
