Naomi Osaka has made a late withdrawal from the Australian Open just an hour before her scheduled third-round match. The 16th seed was set to face Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena, but Inglis will now progress to the round of 16 by default.
In a statement on her Instagram account, Osaka explained her decision to withdraw, citing the need to address a physical issue that arose after her previous match. Expressing her disappointment at having to end her run in the tournament, Osaka thanked her fans for their support and her team for their backing, as well as the tournament organizers for their kindness.
Having recently defeated Sorana Cirstea in a tough match, Osaka’s decision to withdraw marks her second consecutive tournament exit due to injury, following her withdrawal from the Japan Open last year. In that event, she sustained a left thigh injury that prevented her from competing in the quarterfinals.
Prior to her Australian Open withdrawal, Osaka participated in the United Cup in Perth, representing Japan for the first time in her career. Despite facing health issues and coughing during her matches, Osaka remained optimistic about her performance and looked forward to improving her condition for future competitions.
As Osaka focuses on her recovery and prepares for upcoming events, her fans and supporters eagerly await her return to the tennis court.
