A collision near Sheffield has led to the closure of a busy motorway heading southbound. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, quickly responded to the scene, causing significant traffic delays on the M1 between junctions 33 and 32 for the M18 Interchange. The situation was compounded by another vehicle breakdown in close proximity.

Inrix, our traffic partner, provided an update stating: “M1 Southbound closed with long delays due to an accident from J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham) to J32 M18 (M18 interchange). One lane is closed, and traffic is queuing due to a broken down vehicle on the same carriageway from J34 A631 Tinsley Viaduct (Meadowhall) to J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham).”

National Highways confirmed the implementation of diversion protocols following the serious crash that occurred around 6 pm. Investigation crews are on-site to determine the cause of the incident, which is ongoing.

Drivers are advised to follow diversion signs marked with a solid triangle symbol in the area. Meanwhile, a minor collision on the M1 northbound between junctions J19 and J20 has resulted in lane closures, but the situation is expected to be resolved soon according to National Highways traffic data.

Further disruptions are anticipated due to a collision on the M1 southbound entry slip at junction J33, with closures likely to impact traffic overnight and into rush hour. The closure of the M1 in South Yorkshire to southbound traffic is causing significant delays following a single vehicle collision between J33 (Rotherham) and J32 (M18), with emergency services, including Yorkshire Air Ambulance, in attendance.

South Yorkshire Police are conducting collision investigations at the scene, while multiple crashes on the M1 have created chaos for commuters. The series of accidents, including closures on the northbound lanes between junctions J19 and J20, are causing extensive delays for motorists.
