A strong sou’easter wind intensified, causing choppy waves while my mother, known for her humor in such moments, jovially advised, “Drive it like you stole it!” Sailing swiftly to stabilize the lobster boat amidst the turbulent waves, we shared nervous laughter, grateful to be cutting our fishing trip short amid the tumultuous sea.
Seated at the lunch table, a usual spot for meal breaks, everything appeared relatively normal until we had to navigate a challenging turn where currents clashed, causing the boat to be unexpectedly hit from the port side instead of head-on. “Hang on!” my mother’s voice echoed as I clung tightly to a metal pole, witnessing the boat pitch violently, lifting me off the floor as my stomach leaped into my throat. With a white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel, my mom skillfully maneuvered us through the rough waters, averting a potential disaster.
Fortunately, we safely redirected our course towards the calmer waters of the Richibucto River, sharing a relieved laughter that only comes after surviving a harrowing experience together. Later, we discovered a boat sinking just five kilometers away, a reminder of the dangers that can quickly arise at sea in our small community where word spreads rapidly.
Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the maritime industry, with my brother serving as a deckhand on a container ship and my mother, Debbie Thompson, a trailblazing female lobster captain in New Brunswick with 24 seasons of experience, I found my own calling as a deckhand on her fishing vessel five years ago.
Despite the male-dominated nature of the industry, my mother’s pioneering spirit paved the way for women like me to enter this field, challenging outdated superstitions and stereotypes. With determination and resilience, she acquired her first boat, The Toy, in 2000, challenging the norms and showcasing her capabilities as a capable captain.
Embracing the daily risks and uncertainties of fishing, viewed as one of Canada’s most perilous professions, I’ve come to cherish the sanctity of the ocean, finding solace and adventure in its vast expanse. From moments of tranquility under starlit skies to tumultuous days battling fierce weather, each experience at sea is a testament to the dichotomy of nature’s beauty and brutality.
While the challenges and dangers persist, I am proud to follow in my mother’s footsteps, navigating the unpredictable waters alongside her, knowing that each day brings new tests of courage and resilience. As we continue our fishing journey, uncertain of what each season may bring, we stand united as sailors, braving the seas to earn a living and bring the bounty of the ocean ashore.
With each passing day, I am reminded of the legacy of strength and determination that runs through our family, propelling me towards the possibility of one day captaining my own vessel, a testament to the enduring spirit of women in the maritime world.
