Residents of Minneapolis gathered on Sunday morning at the location where Alex Pretti was fatally shot by federal agents the day before.
Pretti, described as a neighbor, friend, and hero, sacrificed his life to defend an innocent woman from the agents’ aggression. The area was adorned with numerous flowers, candles, cards, and signs on a mound of snow where the 37-year-old ICU nurse was killed.
One prominent sign displayed at the front read, “Alex, we will always remember you. Nurse, Neighbor, Helper, Patriot.”
The community mourned around the makeshift memorial. A woman knelt beside the tribute, expressing sorrow for a man she didn’t know personally but felt deeply connected to. She articulated her broken heart and collective weariness felt by everyone present.
Nero, a local activist involved in immigration protests, stated, “While we are in pain, our resilience shines through. In the true spirit of Minnesota, we will persevere and unite.”
“We are not leaving,” he emphasized. “Until they depart, we stand firm. Our commitment is unwavering, regardless of the challenges. Just look around,” Nero gestured towards the gathered crowd.
A woman began singing Amazing Grace, while across the street, a man played a melancholic saxophone tune that mirrored the prevailing mood.
Opposite the memorial, Glam Doll Donuts, a local establishment, continued its operations. The vibrant pink storefront, featured on global news outlets, attracted a stream of people showing solidarity even in the face of tragedy.
Mary Jenson, a resident of North Minneapolis, expressed shock at waking up to news of Pretti’s death the previous day.
Reflecting on the vigils held the night before, Jenson remarked on the resolute determination of those present at the memorial site in honor of Pretti. She highlighted the community’s unwavering support for one another.
“They have chosen the wrong town. The wrong city,” Jenson asserted. “This community will always extend a helping hand to others. The mix of emotions today is palpable, a somber atmosphere overshadowed by the strong turnout.”
The display of solidarity energized the community. The resolve to continue showing up and fighting remains strong, with optimism for a resolution in the near future.
