The co-founder of Midnight Oil, a well-known Australian rock band, has passed away. The band announced Rob Hirst’s death, stating that the drummer is now at peace. In a heartfelt message on their website, the band expressed that Rob had fought bravely for nearly three years before finding relief from pain.
Rob, who was 70 years old, was a key member of the band known for their politically charged hits like “Beds are Burning” and “The Dead Heart” from their successful 1987 album, Diesel and Dust. Midnight Oil was established in 1976 by Rob Hirst and guitarist Jim Moginie, later joined by singer Peter Garrett. The trio performed together until 2002.
Despite being nominated for Grammy Awards in 1989 and 1991, the band did not win. They disbanded in 2002 but reunited in 2016 until 2022. Jim Moginie described Rob as the driving force of Midnight Oil both on and off stage in his memoir, “The Silver River,” published in 2024.
Rob had battled cancer, undergoing numerous treatments. In 2021, he auctioned a drum set used by Midnight Oil from 1979 to 2022 to raise funds for struggling Australian musicians. Following his death, fans paid tribute to the talented drummer.
Australian singer Jimmy Barnes and the Hoodoo Gurus honored Rob’s legacy, highlighting his significant contributions to music. A profound impact was felt across the music community, recognizing Rob’s talent and passion for his craft.
