Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton advocates for Africa to reclaim its resources by breaking away from the influence of various nations like Britain, France, and Spain. Hamilton, a seasoned racer, also expresses his desire for the sport to return to the continent before he retires.
During a pre-Australian Grand Prix interview in Melbourne to kick off the 2026 season, Hamilton responded to a South African journalist’s question regarding the possibility of a race in Africa. The seven-time world champion emphasized his wish for African unity to take back control of the continent, highlighting his concerns about ongoing exploitation.
Hamilton voiced, “I believe Africa is a magnificent region, but it’s disheartening to witness the exploitation and lack of discussion around it. I truly hope that the leaders of these nations unite to reclaim Africa from external powers. It is crucial for the continent’s future.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for an African Grand Prix, Hamilton noted the absence of a race on the continent since 1993. He mentioned his fondness for countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa, suggesting them as potential locations for future Formula 1 events.
The racing icon is actively pushing for Africa to be included in Formula 1’s calendar before his retirement. Hamilton disclosed his ongoing efforts to lobby Formula 1 officials, expressing his determination not to leave the sport without racing in Africa. With his roots in countries like Togo, Benin, Senegal, and Nigeria, Hamilton takes pride in his African heritage and is committed to seeing the sport thrive on the continent.
