Last surviving Chindit hero, Charlie Richards, passes at 104

One of the last surviving heroes from Britain, Charlie Richards, has passed away at the age of 104. Richards, who was one of the two remaining Chindits, recounted his harrowing experiences of surviving the brutal conditions of World War II. The Chindits, also known as the ‘forgotten army,’ conducted clandestine guerrilla operations deep within Burma from 1943 to 1944, amidst the country’s celebration of VE Day.

Despite their valiant efforts in launching daring ambushes on the Japanese forces, the Chindits were largely overlooked, enduring the harsh realities of jungle warfare in what is now Myanmar. Charlie Richards, along with his fellow Chindit Sid Machin, had the honor of meeting the King and Queen during the VJ Day celebrations, where they were recognized as guests of honor by the Royal British Legion. In an interview with The Mirror before the ceremony, Richards expressed concerns about the possibility of another global conflict and urged world leaders to exercise restraint.

Recalling his wartime experiences, Richards described the intense challenges faced by his unit, where death was a constant presence, and danger lurked at every turn. The Chindit offensive, known as Operation Thursday, commenced on March 5th, 1944, with Richards and his comrades equipped with white nylon scarves for navigation in Northern Burma. Tragically, Richards lost his best friend, Son, during a skirmish with Japanese soldiers, highlighting the sacrifices made by the Chindits.

Of the 400 men in his unit, only 140 returned unscathed, underscoring the bravery and resilience of Richards and his fellow Chindits. The Royal British Legion paid tribute to Richards, acknowledging his pivotal role in the elite Chindit regiment and his contributions to the war effort. Richards’ legacy as a courageous warrior and his camaraderie will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
