“Labour Cabinet Minister Rejects All-BAME Candidate List Rumors”

Cabinet Minister Shabana Mahmood has rejected rumors suggesting the implementation of an all ethnic minority candidate list to prevent Andy Burnham from running for a seat in Parliament again.

As the head of Labour’s governing body, the Home Secretary confirmed that the party’s leadership would convene to review Burnham’s application to contest the Gorton & Denton by-election. This decision hinges on approval from Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) due to Burnham’s current role as Mayor of Greater Manchester.

Burnham’s desire to re-enter national politics has stirred internal party strife, with concerns emerging that he might challenge Keir Starmer’s leadership. The Mayor of Greater Manchester has openly expressed his aspirations for the top role, causing friction among Starmer’s supporters after his subtle bid for leadership during last year’s Labour conference.

Amid speculation that Burnham could face obstruction in his bid, Shabana Mahmood dismissed the notion of an all-BAME candidate shortlist as unlawful. However, she noted past instances where Labour had used all-female candidate lists.

In a plea for unity among party members, Mahmood urged colleagues to unite and cautioned against engaging in divisive political tactics reminiscent of the Tories.

Describing Burnham as an outstanding political figure, Mahmood highlighted his achievements in public service and emphasized the importance of having top talents contributing to the Labour Party.

The Home Secretary underscored the significance of avoiding internal conflicts within the party, as she believed it would not sit well with the public. She also downplayed concerns that Burnham’s return to Parliament could disrupt the Prime Minister’s stability.

Mahmood reiterated Burnham’s commitment to supporting Starmer’s leadership and his intention to bring his experience from Manchester to a national platform within the Labour Government. She emphasized the need for a calm and focused approach to political matters to avoid unnecessary drama that could alienate voters.

Highlighting the weariness of the public with political theatrics, she stressed the importance of steering clear of behaviors resembling those of the Conservative Party to maintain the trust of the electorate. Her overarching message to all colleagues was to maintain composure and avoid unnecessary turmoil.
