Keir Starmer has raised concerns about the tragic shooting of an American nurse by agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the administration of Donald Trump.
The nurse, Alex Pretti, was fatally shot during a protest in Minneapolis, becoming the second person killed by ICE agents in the city within the same month. Contrary to the Trump administration’s claims of a threat, eyewitnesses and video evidence showed that Pretti was holding a phone, not a gun, before being tackled to the ground.
When asked about the incident, Keir Starmer expressed worry as global outrage grows over the tactics employed by Trump’s authoritarian ICE squads. While traveling to China, Starmer told reporters, “I haven’t seen all the details, but what I have seen is definitely troubling. I don’t think anyone could watch some of the footage and not find it concerning.”
Despite usually avoiding public criticism of the sensitive US President, Starmer confronted Trump for belittling the contributions of British forces in Afghanistan, leading to a strong backlash in the UK. Trump’s false remarks about NATO forces and a subsequent lackluster apology further strained relations between the two leaders.
In a social media statement, Trump acknowledged the sacrifice of British forces in Afghanistan, but his initial response and subsequent comments faced criticism for being inadequate. He eventually expressed remorse for the deaths of protestors Alex Pretti and Renee Good, following earlier controversial statements.
Gregory Bovino, the border chief who labeled the deceased activists as “domestic terrorists,” has been relieved of his duties, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced scrutiny over her deportations handling. Trump, speaking on Fox News, expressed regret over the killings and noted the political affiliations of the deceased protestors’ parents.
The developments surrounding the fatal shootings have sparked debates and actions within the US government, indicating a broader discussion on law enforcement practices and public safety concerns.
