“ISIS Bride Shamima Begum Plans Escape from Syrian Camp”

ISIS bride Shamima Begum is reportedly waiting for an opportunity to escape a jihadi camp as Syrian government forces take over regions with tent cities. Begum, a former British schoolgirl stripped of her citizenship, was seen moving around stalls wearing a mask in the Al-Roj detention camp, where she is among 2,000 female and child detainees.

Remaining in the camp are 15 British or dual-national women as Syrian government forces advance into Kurdish-controlled territory. While US forces are evacuating male prisoners to Iraq, there has been no recent communication regarding the fate of the female detainees.

There is speculation among other female detainees that Begum and others are hoping to flee the camp during the ongoing offensive. Access to contraband phones allows the women to communicate with ISIS sympathizers globally, with some still hopeful for a resurgence of the extremist movement after Bashar Al-Assad’s regime collapse in 2024.

Despite fears of retaliation from the new Syrian government due to ISIS rivalry, some detainees express regret and a willingness to face the consequences. The camp also harbors radicalized women, with reports of dangerous individuals causing unrest. Umm Hamza, an Egyptian woman with ties to ISIS, highlights the presence of radical elements in the camp.
