A recent report indicates that the release of one edition of GTA 6 might face a delay, potentially disappointing fans who anticipate a particular tradition on the game’s launch day.
As per a report from a Polish publication, a source connected to physical video game sales in Europe suggests that Take-Two, the publisher of GTA 6, is not planning to release a physical edition on the game’s launch day. This decision aims to prevent any further leaks of the game’s storyline, especially after Rockstar Games encountered significant data breaches.
The credibility of this source is supported by their accurate predictions about the physical release of other games like Oblivion Remastered, Microsoft Flight Simulator for PS5, and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Printing physical game copies poses a risk of premature leaks, as physical retailers sometimes release copies before the official launch date. Notably, this occurred with The Last of Us Part 2 when details were leaked online prior to many players experiencing them firsthand.
Given the high anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games is likely taking extensive measures to prevent any further leaks of the game’s storyline. The game already suffered a major leak before its official announcement, with clips circulating online due to a data breach.
Regarding the physical edition’s release date, conflicting reports suggest it could be a few weeks after the digital launch on November 19 or possibly delayed until 2027.
Rockstar and Take-Two have not yet confirmed any delay in the physical edition’s release. If true, fans of the series may miss out on a significant tradition associated with GTA games.
Most mainline GTA games with physical editions have included a paper map, serving as a valuable memento for players to navigate the expansive game world and display as a cherished item.
If the physical release of GTA 6 is postponed until 2027, dedicated fans may face a choice between buying the digital edition without the map or waiting extra weeks to acquire the highly anticipated game.
Fans have long anticipated receiving a physical map of GTA 6, as evidenced by a Reddit post from three years ago expressing this desire. Additionally, comments suggest that players appreciate the inclusion of maps, recalling the map that came with Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
As the gaming industry trends toward a digital-only future, physical editions of games may eventually become obsolete. If this occurs, GTA 6 could mark the end of official paper maps for Grand Theft Auto games, if they are included at all.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
