“GTA 6 Development Shuns AI Despite Industry Trend”

AI integration in the realm of game development has sparked controversy, as developers incorporating it face criticism from their audiences. Despite this, over 36% of game studios have embraced AI in various capacities within their creative processes, as per a recent study.

While top executives emphasize the operational benefits of AI implementation, one would expect a major project like Grand Theft Auto 6, reportedly under development for more than eight years, to leverage this cutting-edge technology.

Contrary to expectations, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, has made it clear that generative AI plays no role in the development of GTA 6. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Strauss Zelnick emphasized that Rockstar Games meticulously crafts their worlds from scratch, focusing on intricate details rather than relying on procedurally generated content.

The decision to exclude AI from the GTA 6 creation process aligns with the game’s timeline, as highlighted by a Reddit user. Much of the foundational work that could have been expedited by AI had already been completed by Rockstar before AI tools became widespread.

This stance by Rockstar is likely to resonate with GTA fans who oppose AI intervention in game development. Zelnick’s statement follows a significant decline in Take-Two Interactive’s stock value post the unveiling of Google’s Project Genie, which raised concerns about the future role of manual asset creation in game design.

Despite Rockstar’s non-utilization of generative AI in GTA 6, Take-Two remains open to exploring the efficiencies and cost-saving potentials offered by AI tools. Zelnick emphasizes that AI should complement creativity rather than replace it, hinting at a balanced integration approach in future projects.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on November 19, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Take-Two expresses confidence in Rockstar’s ability to meet this deadline, assuring fans of an on-time launch.
