The family of a man who was found deceased in a school playground has expressed their heartfelt tribute to their beloved son, brother, father, and friend.
Neil Thompson, affectionately known as Chuck, was discovered on the premises of Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton on Monday. Authorities are currently investigating his passing as unexplained.
In a statement, his grieving family shared, “[Neil] touched the lives of many with his zest for life and humorous anecdotes. Our cherished Chuck, a valued member of the fishing community, was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend. To aid us in finding closure, we appeal to anyone with information or sightings to come forward.”
West Midlands Police have called upon the public to provide any information if they had seen Chuck prior to his demise.
According to official reports, Mr. Thompson was spotted on Wheatsheaf Road in Wolverhampton at 1 am on Monday and was later seen on the school premises at 7:15 am. His family, receiving support from specialized officers during this tragic period, implore individuals with relevant details to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
Described as wearing a distinctive camouflage jacket, grey gilet, jeans, and a beanie hat, Chuck was also carrying a red rucksack and potentially sporting sunglasses at the time of his last sighting.
Supt Martin Hurcomb of the police force stated, “Our teams are diligently examining the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident and are providing assistance to Mr. Thompson’s family. Investigators are actively piecing together his movements and urge anyone who may have seen him in the early hours of Monday to come forward. Neighbourhood officers are also present in the area, offering reassurance to those with concerns.”
While Smestow Academy remained closed on Monday and Tuesday, it is anticipated to resume operations on Wednesday. School officials affirmed that the incident was unrelated to the institution and reassured students through morning assemblies.
An eyewitness, a concerned parent present during the discovery, recounted, “We observed a commotion at the school while walking slowly. A teacher radioed about a ‘major incident, member of the public found.’ Upon inquiring about the individual’s condition, they were uncertain. It became evident that he was not alive. The scene appeared as if he had just been discovered. It was an unexpected sight in such a picturesque area.”
A spokesperson from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed responding to a medical emergency on Windmill Crescent, Castlecroft, Wolverhampton, where one man was tragically pronounced deceased.
