Crystal Palace expressed frustration when Eberechi Eze’s exceptional goal was disallowed at Stamford Bridge. The highly sought-after winger believed he had given the Eagles the lead against Chelsea with a remarkable free-kick.
However, referee Darren England reviewed the play and annulled the goal. He cited Palace defender Marc Guehi’s encroachment on Chelsea’s defensive wall during the goal buildup as the reason for the disallowed goal.
Following the review, referee England stated, “After review, away number six [Guehi] is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken. Therefore, it’s an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal.”
Chelsea’s set-piece coach, Bernardo Cueva, quickly noticed the infringement and engaged in a discussion with fourth official Michael Salisbury at Stamford Bridge. However, there was limited agreement with the decision, as highlighted by Chris Sutton on Sky Sports, who described it as “mightily harsh.”
Former Chelsea player Steve Sidwell also weighed in, mentioning past instances of similar blocking incidents and suggesting that the ruling should set a precedent for the season.
The disallowed goal would have been a significant moment for Eze, who is reportedly close to leaving Palace. Tottenham Hotspur has been heavily linked with a potential £60 million swoop for the talented winger.
Despite expectations of Eze sitting out the match in West London, he surprisingly started against Chelsea. Spurs are anticipated to intensify negotiations with Palace in the coming days to secure the services of the English winger.
Eze had a release clause in his contract at Selhurst Park, which has now expired, necessitating discussions between Spurs and Palace to facilitate any potential transfer.
Oliver Glasner’s team is set to face Fredrikstad FK in the Europa Conference League qualifier before a weekend clash against Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s upcoming match will see them take on West Ham United on Friday evening.
