Meteorologists in the U.K. are forecasting temperatures to soar up to 38°C in central and southeast England, potentially marking the hottest day of the year. The peak temperature recorded so far this year was on June 26, reaching 38°C in eastern England.

The U.K.’s Met Office stated earlier this week that only average weather conditions for the remainder of August are required to surpass last year’s record for the hottest year. Meanwhile, in France, temperatures are expected to rise even higher, hitting 40°C in central and southern regions and reaching 38°C in Paris.

In Britain, hospitals are facing challenges as nurses struggle with heat exhaustion, with some even collapsing due to the extreme temperatures, as reported by the Royal College of Nursing. The lack of adequate air conditioning outside of commercial establishments is compounding the difficulties faced by individuals in dealing with the heat.

Both Britain and France are grappling with severe drought conditions that are impacting agriculture and water resources. Southern Water in England has applied for a rare drought order to restrict non-essential water usage due to the exceptional lack of rainfall, threatening water supplies in certain regions.

With dry conditions persisting and no significant rainfall in sight, authorities in both countries are on high alert for wildfires. Firefighters in Britain have been battling wildfires, with over a thousand recorded in England and Wales this year, emphasizing the need for the U.K. to adapt to the changing climate.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is contemplating banning disposable barbecues to mitigate the risk of wildfires amid the ongoing heatwave. In France, firefighters are facing increased challenges due to extreme weather events, with some regions experiencing wildfires and the threat of strikes looming over demands for additional resources to combat the blazes.
