“Elderly couple guilty of abusing children in Glasgow”

A married couple subjected a 4-year-old girl under their care to cruel treatment by locking her in a chicken coop where geese attacked her, while other children also suffered abuse at their residence in Parkhead, Glasgow. Douglas Daniel, 80, and Barbara Daniel, 75, faced charges in Glasgow Sheriff Court for tormenting children, aged between four and 14, with disturbing punishment methods over a period from 1986 to 1991.

Multiple victims courageously came forward to recount the horrors they endured at the hands of the Daniels, who currently reside in Kent. Despite their denial of the accusations, the couple was found guilty of six counts of mistreatment and abuse towards children.

One witness, who was one of the 100 children fostered by the Daniels starting in 1986, vividly recalled an incident involving her sister being confined in a chicken coop against her will by Douglas Daniel. The witness described how the girl was distressed and screamed for help as the couple callously disregarded her pleas.

Another victim revealed that Barbara Daniel resorted to making her stand among geese as a form of punishment, recounting the fear and intimidation she felt during those harrowing experiences. Additionally, a separate witness shared the degrading treatment she received, including being forced to bathe outside in unsanitary conditions and served repulsive food.

During the court proceedings, it was emphasized how the Daniels displayed a complete lack of empathy and care towards the vulnerable children entrusted to them. The presiding Sheriff Louise Arrol KC condemned their actions as unfathomable cruelty, especially towards young and defenseless victims.

The sentencing for the Daniels was postponed to allow for further investigations, with their bail extended until the next court date in March.
