An Australian woman has shared her surprising experience of uncovering numerous long-lost relatives through a DNA test. Adriana Turk, the daughter of a German Jewish father who fled Nazi Germany in 1937, had believed that all her extended family members perished in the Holocaust.
After her brother Julian passed away in December 2024, Adriana delved into her family history, anticipating scant details. To her amazement, she discovered over 50 living relatives spread worldwide.
Among the newfound relatives were numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, as well as their offspring. She also connected with the descendants of three Holocaust survivors from her grandmother’s lineage using MyHeritage DNA.
Reflecting on this revelation, Adriana expressed to The Independent, “I assumed there was no one out there. Losing my brother left a void, and I wondered, ‘What can I find?’ And I found everything.”
Recently, Adriana met one of her newfound relatives, her cousin Raanan Gidron, a 73-year-old psychotherapist residing in Israel. Mr. Gidron’s mother endured the Theresienstadt concentration camp and Auschwitz, where thousands of Jews were killed.
Mr. Gidron mentioned, “We always knew we had relatives in New Zealand, but it was challenging to trace them.”
Adriana, who felt “empty and invisible” during her youth, now feels she has found “a missing piece” in her life. She and Raanan shared their story on Holocaust Memorial Day, honoring the victims of the Holocaust.
In a time when many in the Jewish community face fear and anxiety, Mr. Gidron believes that reuniting with his cousin brings a message of hope. He expressed being deeply affected by the tragic December attack in Bondi, Australia, where 15 individuals were killed at a Hanukkah event.
The incident, the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996, led to the arrest of Naveed Akram, charged with multiple offenses, including 15 counts of murder. His father, Sajid Akram, lost his life during a confrontation with the authorities.
As more Jewish people utilize DNA testing, like Adriana and Raanan, to reconnect with lost family members, stories of hope and reunion emerge amidst challenging times.
