Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad living in Toronto, shared his experience of unexpectedly diving into the world of whistling competitions with his daughter, Sumire. Initially skeptical, Ben and Sumire signed up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list on a whim after learning about an international whistling contest during a TV quiz show.
Their casual interest quickly turned into a serious commitment when they were accepted to audition for the competition. To their surprise, the contest required in-person participation in Los Angeles, elevating the stakes significantly. Seeking guidance, Ben and Sumire underwent coaching sessions with Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva, who emphasized the need for dedicated practice and performance skills.
Motivated by the challenge and setting an example for Sumire, Ben embarked on a rigorous training regimen, practicing whistling daily for over a month. With determination and support, they found themselves on stage at the 2023 Masters of Musical Whistling competition, surrounded by talented contestants from around the globe.
Despite his initial ironic outlook on life, Ben’s experience at the competition led to a shift in perspective. Witnessing the genuine passion and skill of fellow competitors, Ben and Sumire embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. Sumire’s rendition of a Japanese cartoon theme earned her a silver award in the kids’ category, while Ben secured a gold medal for his performance.
Reflecting on the event, Ben acknowledged the significance of earnestly pursuing one’s passions, shedding the protective layer of irony he had carried since his teenage years. The unexpected success at the competition served as a reminder that genuine dedication and authenticity can lead to meaningful achievements, even in unconventional pursuits.
