“Crown Princess of Norway Regrets Ties to Epstein”

The Crown Princess of Norway has expressed remorse and shame regarding her association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Crown Princess Mette-Marit acknowledged her oversight in not thoroughly checking Epstein’s background after emails between them were disclosed in the recent Epstein files release.

The correspondence revealed discussions about a visit to Epstein’s residence in Palm Beach and his pursuit of relationships. Additionally, a 2012 exchange suggested the princess, who is married to Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, criticized a royal wedding in Luxembourg as dull.

In a statement to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Mette-Marit admitted her failure to vet Epstein’s background thoroughly, stating, “I deeply regret my lapse in judgment and any involvement with Epstein. It is a source of embarrassment.”

The Crown Princess also conveyed her sympathy and support for Epstein’s victims. Mette-Marit’s connection to Epstein first surfaced in 2019, where she also expressed regret for not investigating his history back then.

Her statement precedes the upcoming trial of her son, Marius Borg Høiby, facing multiple charges, including alleged rape, violence in a close relationship, threats, and traffic offenses. His trial is scheduled to commence in Oslo and is anticipated to extend into mid-March. Despite the proceedings, Marius will attend court without the presence of his mother and stepfather.

The Royal Family of Norway confirmed their absence from the trial, emphasizing their decision not to comment on the legal process while continuing with official duties.

Last December, Marius’ family, who had previously remained silent about the allegations, openly discussed the impending court case and its impact on their family. Even King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway addressed the accusations.

The Crown Princess explained her decision to speak out amidst the intense scrutiny surrounding her son’s charges, emphasizing the legal system’s role in addressing the matter appropriately.

Upon Marius’ formal charging in August 2025, State Attorney Sturla Henriksbø emphasized the seriousness of the case and reiterated that Marius should not receive preferential treatment due to his royal status. If convicted, the 29-year-old could face a maximum of 10 years in prison.
