Co-op is set to implement innovative “flexi checkouts” to reduce wait times for customers in stores. These intelligent tills can seamlessly switch between self-service and staff-operated modes based on customer preferences. The aim is to enhance convenience and minimize queues, as stated by Co-op.
Supplied by the American financial and retail tech company Diebold Nixdorf, these checkouts will be gradually introduced to 150 Co-op stores by April. In addition to the dual-mode functionality, the screens will display price discounts, special offers, and promotions. Moreover, there are plans to utilize them for parcel collections in the future. Co-op asserts its position as the first UK supermarket to adopt this advanced technology.
David Tyas, the head of operations, support center, and innovation at Co-op, emphasized the brand’s commitment to local communities. He highlighted the importance of accommodating varying customer preferences, whether they prefer interacting with store staff or opting for a quick transaction.
Furthermore, Co-op recently announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store for the year is situated in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire. Renovations are also planned for existing stores, such as the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.
Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the brand’s dedication to creating stores that serve as community hubs, offering quality products, value, and attractive promotions. The company’s proactive store opening strategy for 2026 aims to strengthen its presence across UK high streets and communities.
Moreover, Co-op unveiled its commitment to creating thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. Through a £70 million investment via its Levy Share service, Co-op plans to establish 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030, supporting skill development and employment opportunities.
By prioritizing innovation, community engagement, and workforce development, Co-op continues to evolve its retail offerings and strengthen its presence in the UK market.
