Co-op has revealed plans to launch 18 new or upgraded stores within the initial quarter of 2026. The first addition to the Co-op store lineup for the year will be situated in the fresh residential area of Willowbrook Park in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
Among the upcoming openings, certain stores are set to reopen after undergoing renovations, such as the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated establishment in Ealing, London. Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, emphasized the brand’s commitment to establishing vibrant local stores that serve as community hubs, offering quality products and value to members and customers.
Expressing enthusiasm for the expansion efforts, McCrae highlighted the focus on enhancing Co-op’s presence in various UK high streets and neighborhoods. Additionally, Co-op recently outlined its initiative to introduce thousands of new apprenticeships by 2030, with a £70 million investment through its Levy Share service to support this endeavor.
The Levy Share scheme allows levy-paying employers to transfer surplus apprenticeship levy funds to aid businesses, charities, and community organizations. Over the past four years, the program has facilitated over 3,800 apprenticeships, with a significant portion benefiting deprived communities and the care sector.
Claire Costello, Co-op’s chief people and inclusion officer, underscored the impact of the Co-op Levy Share program in creating valuable opportunities from unused levy funds. Costello noted the commitment to allocate £70 million towards generating 7,000 apprenticeships by the end of the decade. The Co-op also advocated for the collection of socioeconomic background data for apprenticeships to ensure inclusivity in the system.
The Co-op’s strategic moves in store expansion and apprenticeship creation reflect its ongoing efforts to strengthen community engagement and support workforce development initiatives.
