“Céline Dion Overcomes Rare Disorder for Paris Residency”

Céline Dion, the renowned Canadian singer, is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris next month. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Dion shared details about her battle with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological autoimmune disorder she was diagnosed with in 2022 after experiencing symptoms for 17 years.

The excruciating pain Dion endured, particularly worsening in 2020, often left her struggling to walk and reliant on a high dosage of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition affecting a very small percentage of the population, characterized by muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, noise, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause or approved treatment for the disorder, various therapies can help manage symptoms.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, masking the severity of her condition from fans. Feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her supporters, she acknowledged their unwavering backing that enabled her to seek extensive treatment post-diagnosis.

Since canceling her shows following the diagnosis, Dion has been diligently following a rigorous recovery routine involving medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly in motion and wary of stillness for fear of stiffness, Dion views her recovery and impending return to the stage as nothing short of a miracle that she cherishes. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to perform again, she emphasized the importance of appreciating one’s blessings. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly apprehensive, Dion is eager to resume her musical journey with a 26-concert Paris residency scheduled from September 12 to May 29 next year.
