“Boost Router Security: Experts Warn of Cyber Threats”

While your Wi-Fi router is essential for internet connectivity, it can also serve as an entry point for cybercriminals. Neglecting to customize your router settings leaves it vulnerable, potentially compromising the security of all connected devices.

Security experts caution that millions of users are exposing their routers to cyber threats. To counter this risk, Broadband Genie has shared key recommendations to enhance security and thwart potential attacks.

These suggestions include modifying the default password, ensuring regular updates, and altering the network name.

“Adjusting your router’s default configurations may seem daunting, but the process is simple and quick,” stated Alex Tofts, a broadband specialist at Broadband Genie.

“To begin, access your router’s control panel. The router will display a web address that you can enter into your browser.”

Following these recommendations is crucial as stronger security measures reduce the risk of hacking and malware infiltration on devices.

Here are five adjustments to consider for your router, as suggested by Broadband Genie.

Modify your network encryption settings

Your router offers various encryption types to secure data transmitted over its wireless network. Ensure the password type is set to ‘WPA2’ or ‘WPA3’ instead of ‘WEP’ for enhanced security.

Establish and update passwords

A strong router password is critical to prevent security breaches. The router administrator password controls access to the settings and is often set to a default password shared among all routers from the same manufacturer. Change both the administrator and Wi-Fi passwords to thwart potential hacking attempts.

Customize your network name

Broadband Genie advises reviewing the default network name, which may reveal your provider and router make. Changing the network name adds an extra layer of security against hackers, according to Tofts.

“You can choose any name you like to make it identifiable to your household, such as ‘Batman’s Cave’ or ‘Hogwarts Castle’,” Tofts suggested.
