Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, supported by a dedicated team of over 300 volunteers in orange shirts ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.
Wednesday marked the transition day at the Games as the next wave of athletes arrived in the city, with sports activities set to resume in the evening. Duane Huxter, who has been stationed at the Corner Brook Civic Centre for over a week, was engaged in preparing merchandise for the athletes, particularly focusing on folding t-shirts.
Reflecting on his unexpected prolonged involvement, Huxter shared with CBC News on Wednesday, “I initially thought I would just be organizing a small amount of merchandise last Monday. I had told my wife I would return home by noon, but I have been here ever since.”
Volunteers play a multifaceted role in the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to manage logistics to ensuring the seamless execution of events at various venues. Dave Campbell, the games director with SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in the event’s success.
According to Campbell, the strong community connections and volunteer support have been instrumental in the smooth functioning of the Games. He acknowledged the significant contribution of volunteers in making events like these possible and praised communities like Corner Brook and Stephenville for their enthusiastic participation.
Coordinating attire for 10 teams presented a significant challenge, but Huxter emphasized the value it adds to the athletes’ overall experience and memories. Despite playing a relatively minor role in events like the opening ceremony, Huxter finds fulfillment in his contribution to the athletes’ performance and enjoyment.
Expressing his dedication, Huxter stated, “It’s demanding work and can be physically exhausting. But my ultimate goal is for the athletes to leave this event with a positive experience, and I am glad to play a small part in that.” He highlighted the satisfaction of witnessing athletes proudly representing their regions, clad in the apparel he meticulously prepared.
The commitment and hard work of volunteers have been pivotal in ensuring the success of the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, creating a positive and memorable experience for all involved.
