This year, he noticed balcony seats for similar premium screenings, which often feature Q-and-A sessions with the cast or director, being sold for up to $106.
Many fans, including Singh, have expressed concerns about the escalating ticket prices at TIFF. While ticket costs have typically increased slightly each year, the noticeable spike this year marked the first time in recent memory that films, aside from the opening and closing night galas, surpassed the $100 mark.
Tickets for highly anticipated films like Palme d’Or winner “Fjord,” justice system thriller “Prima Facie,” and Ryan Gosling-produced “Love of Your Life” were reported to be selling for as much as $106. Some fans shared screenshots on Reddit showing tickets in the front rows of premieres priced at $128, compared to $98 for similar seats last year.
Despite multiple inquiries, TIFF did not provide any comments on the ticket pricing situation. Diehard fans, who typically watch up to 30 films during the festival’s 10 days, are now reconsidering the number of premieres they will attend due to the cost.
Joel Chico, an actor who spends around $2,000 on up to 30 premium screening tickets annually, expressed concerns about the rising costs. While fans appreciate the experience of watching films with cast members present, the increasing prices are challenging for many attendees.
TIFF, which usually releases price ranges for various tickets ahead of the festival, did not disclose the pricing details for different seating categories this year. Regular screenings started at $30 for non-members, while premium screenings began at $46. However, during a ticket search, many premium seats were found to be priced as high as $106.
According to Charlie Keil, a professor at the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto, TIFF is likely raising prices due to both demand and financial needs. The festival has realized that movie enthusiasts are willing to pay premium prices for exclusive screenings with celebrity guests in attendance.
Besides demand, arts organizations like TIFF often rely on patrons to support them amid rising costs. Keil highlighted that inflation, combined with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, has added financial strain on TIFF. Despite challenges, TIFF continues to adapt, with recent sponsorships and government support helping to sustain the festival.
Cathy Crowe, a longtime TIFF attendee, expressed disappointment over the escalating prices, recalling a time when tickets were more affordable. Crowe, who typically watches between 20 to 30 films annually, finds the current pricing scheme challenging and worries about the festival’s accessibility to regular attendees.
As ticket prices soar, some fans, like Crowe, are reevaluating their festival attendance, questioning the affordability of being a TIFF enthusiast. Despite the changes, TIFF remains a prominent event, attracting audiences from across the country. However, the shift in pricing dynamics has sparked concerns about the festival’s accessibility and inclusivity.
